RE: Immigration reform
Dear Honorable Ladies and Gentlemen:
We join together to urge the Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform in 2007. It is vital that any such legislation include the following elements endorsed by the U.S. Catholic bishops:
- an earned legalization program for undocumented persons which includes a path to citizenship;
- a worker program that permits migrant workers to enter the U.S. legally, includes worker protection, and provides the option for these workers to pursue citizenship;
- the reform of family-based immigration cases that reduces the waiting time for family reunification; and
- policies that address the root causes of migration, including economic development in sending countries.
